USB vs UART for OEM NFC Modules: What to Confirm Before Ordering

A board connector does not identify the host protocol. Build an interface brief before choosing a USB or serial NFC module.

OEM procurement guide

An embedded host may expose USB, RS-232 or a UART header, but these connections do not make a reader interchangeable. The procurement question is whether the exact module, interface option, host software and cable assembly form a supported integration path.

Start with the integration requirement

ACM1552U-Z2 and ACM1552U-Y3 are USB CCID / PC/SC modules. Their board connectors are not evidence of a UART interface. If the host needs serial communication, investigate an explicitly supported serial model and request its protocol, electrical specification and configuration.

Ask for selection support

1. Identify the host interface before selecting the reader

Record the host model, available interface and operating system. A processor board with a UART header needs a different integration brief from a host capable of USB device enumeration.

  • For USB, confirm that the host can operate as a USB host and provide the required power.
  • For serial, state whether the design requires RS-232 or a TTL/UART option. Do not treat those electrical interfaces as equivalent.

2. Confirm the software path, not just the connector

USB CCID / PC/SC and a serial command protocol are separate software paths. The application must be able to perform the intended card operations through the selected interface.

  • List the host OS version, driver or library, required card commands and application API.
  • For a serial candidate, request the command reference and error-handling requirements for that exact option. Do not assume it presents a PC/SC device.

3. Request the pinout and cable assembly

A small board connector can carry USB signals. Connector shape, pin count or similar product names do not establish a compatible cable or protocol.

  • ACM1552U-Z2 lists a 5-pin, 1 mm-pitch board connector for its USB interface. Confirm the mating connector and supplied cable.
  • Request the pin assignment and cable drawing for the exact module. Do not substitute a Z2 cable for a Y3 assembly by appearance.

4. Treat the serial configuration as a separate purchase decision

ACM1552D-C7 is a serial candidate to investigate: the manufacturer lists USB or RS-232, with TTL/UART available on request. Confirm the interface option and documentation in the quotation.

  • Request the electrical requirements, connector, protocol and firmware for the proposed serial configuration.
  • The C7 page labels its listed operating modes as USB-only. Do not transfer those mode claims to RS-232 or TTL/UART without confirmation.

5. Define what the application must do with the card

Detecting a UID does not demonstrate access to every application on a card. The test brief should identify the actual card or tag and the data operations required.

  • State the card or tag model, commands, credential or key requirements, and required reader mode.
  • Ask whether a SAM slot, a SAM card or an SDK is required and what the quoted assembly includes. These are separate items.

6. Evaluate the proposed configuration before a volume order

Use an evaluation unit with the intended host and software. Keep a record of the supplied hardware and firmware so results can be tied to the configuration being quoted.

  • Exercise connection, card detection, the intended read/write operation, errors and reconnects in your application.
  • Include enclosure constraints, evaluation quantity, forecast quantity, destination and requested date in the enquiry. Confirm commercial terms in the quote.

Models to investigate

What to include in your enquiry

  • Host model, interface and OS version
  • Application API, card or tag model and required operations
  • Connector, pinout, power and proposed cable assembly
  • Requested interface option, SAM and SDK scope
  • Evaluation quantity, expected order quantity, destination and schedule

Discuss your OEM NFC integration

Share your host, cards, enclosure and evaluation needs so the enquiry can address the right module and configuration.

Price, sample availability, MOQ and lead time require confirmation in the quotation.

Frequently asked questions

Can ACM1552U-Z2 connect directly to a UART header?

The cited Z2 model documents specify USB. Do not infer UART support from its board connector. Request a suitable serial option if the host cannot provide the required USB integration.

Will a USB-to-serial cable make a USB NFC module a UART reader?

A cable or adapter alone does not establish a supported end-to-end integration path. Confirm the host role, reader protocol, application software and electrical requirements before proposing an adapter.

What should the supplier confirm for a TTL/UART option?

Ask for the exact model and option, electrical specification, connector pinout, command reference and firmware. Confirm the supported card operations and which accessories are included.
